En el corazón de Europa, cerca de Nebra, la ciudad de Orum vive partida en dos por el río Neda. Sus dos orillas llevan generaciones separadas por el recuerdo de un odio pasado: años atrás, la orilla Este fue arrasada por los Redos sin que nadie del Oeste acudiera en su ayuda. El río Neda, inmensamente ancho y navegable, es a la vez camino y frontera; y sobre él pesa una vieja leyenda: cuando cae la noche, se dice que las ánimas del río emergen de sus profundidades y vagan sobre las aguas.
In the heart of Europe, near Nebra, the city of Orum lies split in two by the river Neda. Its two banks have lived apart for generations, divided by the memory of a past hatred: years ago, the East bank was razed by the Redos while no one from the West came to its aid. The river Neda, immensely wide and navigable, is both road and border, and an old legend hangs over it: when night falls, it is said that the spirits of the river rise from its depths and drift across the water.

Barton Flynn, heir of West Orum, dreams of uniting both banks after generations of hatred. His love for Leba Tillet kindles the hope of peace, but not everyone in the East is willing to forget, and across the river the Redos bide their time.
