In an uncertain, decaying future, Orum is recovering from the bloody Battle of the Neda. Barton Flynn has become a hero, and the legend of the spirits who helped him in battle spreads from mouth to mouth through the western valleys. But there are too many dead to celebrate the victory. It is time to honour them and keep fighting to survive…

The first snows follow the funeral procession through the streets of Orum. Barton and his mother Isabella walk ahead of dozens of coffins, followed by the families, the survivors and the rest of Orum's people. The funeral ends as the last of the bodies is solemnly cast into the river Neda.
Night slowly falls over Orum and its people gradually return to their homes. Barton, who now bears the task of leading his people, cannot help but collapse in grief.
Ilustración en procesoIllustration in progressEl invierno no da tregua.
Winter shows no mercy. The food stores are not enough, and several months of cold still lie ahead. Food is rationed and more warm clothing is handed out. Barton barely appears in public, while the popularity of his mother Isabella keeps growing, more concerned with her image than with lifting her son's spirits.
Rebuilding the bridge has become the symbolic goal of the whole community, and rituals follow one another in thanks to the spirits of the river, whom everyone talks about but no one has seen again.
One morning a badly wounded rider limps into Orum. He tells of an attack by a small band of Redos together with the Somuí tribe, north of the Serfas, who are desperately asking for help. Isabella and Barton are told of the attack but decide not to send their depleted troops, although Barton offers to ride out with a small group of men to support their neighbours.
His mother refuses and, after a bitter argument, Barton storms out, mounts his horse and disappears, alone, over the horizon.
After several hours on the road, Barton is caught in a terrible storm of sleet and snow that his horse cannot withstand. A long distance still lies ahead, and he must cover it alone and on foot.
The cold becomes unbearable. Barely able to breathe, Barton has spent hours trying to find his way, but it is hopeless. He can hardly stand. In a final effort, his hands almost frozen, he tries to dig a small shelter in the snow, but he faints before he can finish it. Fortunately, the first rays of sunlight appear on the horizon.
At dawn, a distant voice begins to be heard. Barton wakes as a slender, middle-aged man offers him a hand to help him up. Slowly, Barton answers his kindness with a faint smile. Aware of his weakness, he gratefully accepts the offer and rides with Dreas on his horse.
After several days of travel, richer vegetation announces that the river Neda is near. Suddenly, beyond the brow of a white hill, a small village appears: Tabenia. Its houses, carved into the mountain, hang in harmony, their reflection glimpsed in the icy waters gently stirred by a waterfall. Reaching a small house, Barton follows Dreas's advice and lies down on a humble wooden bed beneath an ornate headboard that reads: “Nisalda”. Tomorrow is another day.
Visibly worried, Isabella orders a search for Barton in every direction, but there is no trace of her son. Serfa is a ghost town. No one knows anything. No one has seen anything. The hope of seeing Barton alive again fades day by day, and the people of Orum, in need of someone to lead their recovery, turn to Isabella.
With Barton gone, Isabella tightens her grip on the Orum assembly: they will seek help and protection from the mercenaries of the Shakoryu family, from the village of Derva, until they rebuild their troops and recover from the Battle of the Neda. Some wonder at what price their safety will be secured.
The Shakoryu are received with honours in Orum, and Nisa Shakoryu pays her respects to Isabella. The warriors remove their masks so that Orum can see all the Shakoryu sisters in broad daylight. Isabella gives her first orders: she imposes a curfew and hands all authority to the mercenaries. A new hunger for expansion floods the city. The power of the new army and Isabella's strength of character fill the streets of Orum with enthusiasm.
Barton recovers alongside Dreas, and their trust deepens as their friendship grows. In a weak voice, Dreas tells of the disappearance of his wife, Altea, and his daughter, Nisalda, kidnapped years ago by Bádaro riders. It was because he is still searching for them that he found Barton unconscious in the snow. All that remains is to finish his search at the Shadowed Summit, where many believe lie remains of the origin of the holocaust, guarded by a cannibal tribe that no one wants or dares to approach. Without hesitation, Barton offers his help and company on this last journey, but first he confesses his true identity and his past as a leader of Orum. There are no more secrets between them.
Barton and Dreas set out for the Shadowed Summit and reach the bleak Huts of Bresna at nightfall. They try to rest, but Barton tosses in nightmares in which Leba appears as a ghost and urges him to continue the journey. The next day the cold forces them to shelter in a cave, very close to the peak.
At last, and not without effort, Barton and Dreas reach the summit. Through a narrow passage they see dozens of men, women and children gathered to the rhythm of mournful chants, ready for the ritual sacrifice of a young woman bound to a small stone altar.
With the sacrifice imminent, Barton, followed by his companion, confronts the sinister congregation, which falls spellbound at the sight of his face. Barton does not realise that behind him one of the cave walls bears a painting of his face that tells, in detail, his past, his present and his future. The Eolians begin to kneel, worshipping Barton.
Barton, Dreas and the young woman seize the moment to escape through the narrow tunnels inside the mountain…
Suddenly, daylight at the end of one of the tunnels blinds the fugitives. When their sight returns, they see more Eolians gathered in the open air outside the cave, kneeling before Barton, in whom they believe the prophecy has come true: the man who will bring hope back to the survivors of the holocaust.
