In an uncertain, decaying future, Central Europe is home to the city of Orum. Divided into two banks by the river Neda, West Orum and East Orum live apart in memory of an old hatred. Years ago, taking advantage of an expedition by the men of Orum, the East bank was attacked by the bloodthirsty and ambitious Redos tribe from the village of Redium. The city was razed, its women raped and murdered and their mutilated bodies thrown into the river, with no help from the West.
Two families rule the cities: in West Orum, Noris Flynn and his wife Isabella with their young son, Barton. In East Orum, devoted to the care of his daughter Leba, Siros Tillet rules his people. With them lives his nephew Vaxié, whom he adopted after his parents were killed in a Redos ambush.
When the patriarch of the Flynns dies, his son Barton, weary of so much violence, is determined to end the rivalry. His dream is unification. After long negotiations and exhausting meetings with the reluctant Siros Tillet, the building of a bridge joining both banks across the island of Árema, in the middle of the river, will mark peace between the cities and the families.

Amanece.
Dawn breaks. Barton, lost in thought, watches the city. The silence is broken only by the whisper of the spirits wandering the depths of the river, a memory of the battle that ended the prosperity of the East.
As a symbol of the new brotherhood, a great feast is prepared on the island of Árema, and everyone from both banks is invited. The embrace between Barton Flynn and Siros Tillet fills every heart with optimism and trust.
The feast begins, and music, food and drink fill the tables. Everyone enjoys themselves, toasting and singing. Overwhelmed by the crowd, Barton withdraws to the shore. Seeing him apart from the celebration, Leba comes over to talk to him, thanking him for the change he stands for and offering her future cooperation. Soon the conversation flows between them beside the waters of the Neda. Two hours have passed when they are interrupted by Vaxié who, secretly and obsessively in love with his cousin, demands Leba's return. Barton and Leba agree to meet again. The feast comes to an end.
As work begins, the project to build the bridge comes to life. At the same time, the affection between Barton and Leba grows. Yet alongside the hope of a united Orum, embodied by the young lovers, there is also a hidden danger. Someone does not share this future.
Technical difficulties and the huge cost of the construction bring the project to a halt. Calling an urgent meeting of the leaders, Barton meets Siros and Vaxié at the Tillet house. The constant tension stirred up by Vaxié over the management of the works and the sharing of power in the future united Orum forces Barton to leave without an agreement. On his way out he finds Leba in the garden and asks her to meet him that very night on the island of Árema.
Siros and Vaxié carry on their heated argument inside the house. Siros sharply rebukes Vaxié for his attitude. Vaxié, in turn, accuses him of trying to secure an uncertain prosperity by giving up power, and of allowing his daughter's relationship with an enemy of the family.
When his uncle threatens to remove him from the negotiations if he will not cooperate, Vaxié, driven by rage and hunger for power, carries out his betrayal and strikes his uncle a fatal blow. Alerted by the shouting, Leba heads to the house and witnesses the deadly scene. Terrified, she runs upstairs, followed by Vaxié, who corners her in the bedroom and throws her violently onto the bed. Leba fights back, but against Vaxié's strength it is useless. Leba dies, strangled by her cousin.
Anochece.
Night falls. Vaxié takes Leba's body and carries it down the cliff stairs, laying it in a boat at the Tillet dock. He casts off the moorings and lets the boat slip into the darkness of the night. Leba's body drifts slowly down the river, accompanied by the water spirits, who guide it towards the island of Árema. Meanwhile, Vaxié flees through the dense forest towards Redium.
Barton waits for Leba on the island. After a long wait, he sees a boat approaching, unable to make out what or who is in it. As it draws near, he sees in horror that Leba lies inside, pale and cold, still and lifeless, her feet bound as a sign of betrayal.
His gaze lost, Barton unties Leba's feet and lifts her out of the boat, holding her close. His arms lose their strength and Leba's body slowly sinks into the river. When she has vanished into the black waters, Barton hears the war drums of the Redos and wakes from his daze. The battle is near.
Having gathered his trusted men, all opposed to unification, Vaxié has reached Redium, where he has met its leader, Klos, and promised him part of West Orum if he and his army back the final attempt at invasion. Seeing that the moment is perfect for an all-out attack, Klos accepts and orders the assault at once.
Under the full moon of the ninth month, the Battle of the Neda begins. The Redos surge violently towards the boats of the West. Fire lights up the pitch-black night and blood stains the waters of the Neda with hatred. The Flynn troops are quickly surrounded by enemy boats. In desperation, Barton orders his ships set ablaze and rammed into the enemy. Men on both sides throw themselves into the river, where the tragic battle goes on along the shores of Árema.
Horror rules the night, and inevitably Barton and Vaxié meet. Hurling themselves at each other, they begin their duel, sword against sword. Their movements are far from precise, swept along by the violent passion that grips them, and the fight is more fitting for beasts than for knights.
With one last effort, and Barton beaten, Vaxié prepares to finish him off. Then the spirits of the Neda rise from the water and drag Vaxié into the depths of the river. The battle is decided. The few surviving Redos retreat with the badly wounded Klos.
Exhausted, Barton gazes at the bleak landscape left by the battle as he remembers Leba. The Battle of the river Neda comes to an end. The bridge, shattered by the burning ships, slowly sinks into the river.
Now all that remains is everything else.
